035 – Viewer stats from iTunes and the last Theme you will ever need

How can you get viewer stats from iTunes? You can’t but I show you how to use Podtrac to get viewer stats. I also introduce you to the Atahualpa Wordpress theme which is highly configurable.
I use Podtrac to count downloads of my podcast. I use them specifically because they are free and it’s a simple redirect in the download link so it doesn’t affect download speed.
It’s fairly simple to use, you just modify your download link. As an example here is how I would modify a download link for my podcast:

The original file is:
http:///blip.tv/file/get/Dholowiski-034__Page_Redirection_and_Click_To_Call261.flv

To modify it to work with Podtrac (first make sure you have a podtrac account) remove the http:// and add the podtrac url:

http://www.podtrac. com/pts/redirect.flv/blip.tv/file/get/Dholowiski-034__Page_Redirection_and_Click_To_Call261.flv

The stats update daily, and are usually necessary if you are looking for an advertiser.

I also show off the great Atahualpa Wordpress theme, which is highly configurable. Some of the things you can configure:

  • How many sidebars
  • header graphic/behaviour
  • Highly configurable widgets
  • Fonts, sizes are all changeable through the theme options
  • HTML and CSS can be inserted through the theme options without having to edit files

That’s all for the podacst, have a great day!

  • Hi Dave,

Thanks so much for answering my question and allowing me to make a “guest appearance” on your show. Sorry it has taken me so long to comment. I created an account with Podtrac but I need to take some time to set up the tracking.

I also started a new blog and I took your suggestion and I’m using the Atahualpa Theme (not sure if you pronounced it right, but at least you spelled it correctly). I really like it.

I’m sure I’ll have more questions for you soon and I think it is really neat the way I can leave a voice mail for you right on your site.

    I’ll see you in Twitterville.

I’m glad you enjoyed it, it is so nice to get feedback from viewers. Let me know if you have any Podtrac questions – I’ve been using it for over a year.
And yes that theme is wonderful… I like it because it is so customizable you can do just about anything with it.

This has also been a very popular show episode… i’m sure you tweeting it had something to do with it so again, thank you so much!

  • Nice podcast as always. You keep them short and to the point, always giving us useful techniques. I find this much easier to follow than just reading about WP.

    Keep up the good work!

Hi Joe, thanks for the comments. I thought your name was familiar – Cliff Ravenscraft showed off your website/podcast in a webinar he did a couple of weeks ago. I’m downloading your podcast right now.
